Muungano is a Swedish design group established in 1996. In Swahili, Muungano means fusion or unification, honoring the goals, activities and business of Muungano.
Muungano has its roots in a critical discussion about the meaning, methods and values of design but has broadened through the years to include a commercial stance to design. It is a conscious method of Muungano to combine discussions not often heard in strict commercial contexts (let's call it an academic one) with a discussion that commercial actors and agents recognize and find comfortable (let's call that a business one).
Muungano does not only discuss artistic values and ethics as self reflection but also as a commercial opportunity. By combining artistic tools and research with established business practices, Muungano pursues new models of profitability.
Since 1996 the business has grown to embrace eight persons, within architecture, economics, product and industrial design, philosophy, engineering and advertising. Muungano is situated in the three biggest cities in Sweden, Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm.
We are working within business contexts and in academic and artistic environments, within companies, universities and art institutions and havecarried out projects in Denmark, Finland, Japan, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, Tanzania, Uganda, USA.
